If the conversation was about linoleum, then it must be said that this flooring material in its time, when it just appeared on the building materials market, made a real sensation. It was an explosion equal to the explosion of an atomic bomb, because the appearance of linoleum made it possible to change the finish of the floors to the side, hitherto unprecedented.
To talk a lot about this material and its merits does not make sense – they are all known. But many people often ask the question – how to properly lay the linoleum, what methods exist, what else must be done to ensure that this process is at the highest quality level?
In order to answer all the questions posed, it is necessary first of all to understand how to install this flooring material and to determine which of the methods is the best, the most affordable and the most reliable.
Preparing the floor base
To lay linoleum according to the rulebook, it is necessary to prepare a floor for it. That is, the base floor needs to be leveled and strengthened. If it is concrete, then you can simply pour it with a screed made of a cement-sand mixture. If wooden floor, you will have to fork out, because any plank floors will be leveled to the maximum level of flatness will not work.
Such a floor will have to be covered with plywood. This is quite a serious process, which requires not only the presence of the plywood itself, but also the preliminary repair of the wooden floor.
It will be necessary to identify flaws and defects of the boards, remove them, and if it does not work, then change them to new ones.
Also it will be necessary to polish the surface of the entire floor and only after that install and attach the sheets of plywood. But even in the process of fixing plywood has its own nuances. They will be of interest to out-of-town residents who live in houses with engineered wooden floors.
First, the plywood is laid according to the scheme of brickwork. This is necessary in order to distribute the loads that are formed during the process of changing the temperature and humidity of the air inside the room. Like any wood material, plywood under the influence of these loads can expand or contract.
Secondly, as a fastener for plywood, you can choose cloves or glue. Both variants are used today by masters. Both are reliable and time-tested. Sometimes even with the glue method, the master punches the plywood sheets along the edges with nails for reliability.
Why is the preparation of the floor base necessary? The fact is that linoleum has a sufficiently low coefficient of bending. Small irregularities will lead to the fact that in these places there will be a bend and damage. Linoleum flooring can just crack.
Types of laying
Before starting the floor installation process, it is necessary to bring this floor material into the room where it will be laid and straighten it all along the length. In places of large folds, it is best to deliver a load, for example, five-liter plastic bottles filled with water. In this condition, he should lie for 2-3 days. In the event that the folds do not straighten out, it is better to return such a linoleum back to the store and take another one.
Single-band method installation
The easiest way to lay linoleum is one-side. What does it mean? If the width of the room is not more than the width of the material roll, then the linoleum is stacked so that immediately covers the entire area of the room. This is called a one-way method of laying.
To do this, you need to accurately measure the length of the room and trim the material to fit a bit more than the length of the room – centimeters by 10-15. Why is this done? Because in the process of exploitation, whether you want it or not, the linoleum is narrowed. The same with the width.
Now you need to expand the strip exactly the size of the room and bend it in half along the room. The open part of the base floor must be treated with glue. Here, use brushes or a paint roller. It is necessary to wait 20 minutes for the glue to “come up”.
Then unbend the strip and lay it on the floor. In the hands of a clean roller, which from the center to the edges rolled the entire area of the laid half of the linoleum. Extruded from the edges of the glue, this sometimes happens, immediately remove with a clean cloth or rag. Now the second half is bent, and the operation is carried out identically described.
You can use two-sided adhesive tape instead of glue. Here, half of the roll is also bent, and an adhesive tape is installed around the perimeter. Then the protective film is removed from it, linoleum is straightened and it is stacked exactly on the spread out tape.
The method is simpler, but not as reliable as with glue.
This is completely different from the previous version. Laying linoleum with a two-strip scheme requires a specific approach and special materials. The method of fixing linoleum to the floor is here called welding. And there are two kinds of welding: cold and hot welding.
Cold welding of linoleum
Here, as in the case of a one-side laying, glue is used. But this glue is special and can be of two kinds: “A” and “C”. If the mark “A” is taken, the joints of the two rolls are processed with an adhesive tape, which is applied in such a way that it immediately covers the two edges of the two rolls. Then, with a sharp knife, the tape is cut exactly along the joint, where the glue “A” is poured.
After the adhesive solution is completely dry, you need to remove the adhesive tape. The welding is finished. If a “C” glue is used, the gluing process is many times simpler. To do this, it is necessary to pour the mortar itself end to end between the strips of the material and wait until it dries well. After that, the floor can be exploited in full.
Hot welding at the joints of linoleum
If the previous methods are available in terms of their implementation even for non-professionals, then only the specialist will master the hot welding. Here, without special equipment and special additional materials you cannot do. The equipment will require a welding machine for fastening linoleum and a fastening cord made of polymer.
The process itself is divided into two stages
It can be started from either side. To do this, the welding machine is installed in such a way that the polymer cord inserted into it, melting, drips into the junction of two strips of material.
Note! The welding process can be started only when the machine reaches a temperature of at least +350 C. Because the polymer from which the cord is made melts at this temperature.
So, the device is ready, you can start promoting it along the junction. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that the polymer material drips directly into the joint. You need to move the device slowly, neatly. So it is necessary to reach half way and stop in the middle of the room. Usually, the dripping polymer creates a layer that protrudes above the surface of the floor material. While this layer is not frozen, it is necessary to cut off its protruding part with a special sharp sickle-shaped knife.
Now we need to move to the opposite side of the room, where to start the second stage of the process. The technology is the same. The only point to be considered is the overlapping of the fastening polymer material. That is, you do not need to complete the dripping with the previous one, but with a small grip, that is, you’ll have to drip from above.
Ready, the welding part is finished. What’s left? Remove excess stapling material, attach skirting boards and exploit the new engineered floor. The most amazing thing is that you can walk right on the linoleum. This is one of its qualities that consumers like so much.
This is how the linoleum is laid. For many, this may seem a rather complicated process, but methods have already gone into oblivion when this floor covering was nailed to the floor with nails and wooden laths. It was also unreliable in those days, but there were no other ways.
Modernity dictates its conditions, new technologies, new materials, and new types of equipment appear. And they improve the quality of the assembly processes, which, in turn, increase the life of the finishing floor materials. To which we all have always aspired.
